Pear and Pineapple Smoothie

A good drink to choose before and after most activities including extra-energy sports, such as circuit training and basketball. Pineapples contain an enzyme, bromelain, that breaks down protein. This juice is rich in B vitamins. These help release energy from carbohydrate- essential for all athletes, especially those who practise aerobic, endurance or extra-energy sports.

2 pears

¼ pineapple, about 215g (7 ½ oz) flesh

once skin an core have been removed

½ lime

Wash the pears. Remove the skin and hard central core of the pineapple. Scrub the lime. Chop the fruit into even-sized pieces and juice it. Pour into a glass and add a couple of ice cubes, if liked..

Makes 300ml (½ pint); Serves 1

This juice is an excellent source if vitamins C, B1 and B6, calcium and copper.
